Snails, fine fare and local wine at foodie agm

The Upper Goulburn Food Wine and Culture Group annual general meeting was held on Wednesday 5th September at the Yarck Hotel, and again about 30 small producers enjoyed a convivial evening.  With delicious food prepared by Chef Daryl Doyle washed down with local regional wines members networked and also listened to an entertaining talk by guest speaker Robyn Schrader from “Yarra Valley Snails” in Buxton.

Robyn spoke about the support and infrastructure that she received from the snail guru of Australia, the late Sonya Begg and how the love of these wonderful little gastropods are now a major part of her life.
There were many funny facts about snails such as the silver trails that they make are not all that they seem, you can hear them eat if you listen close enough and they make love for up to 14 hours at a time which drew hearty laughter from the attendees.

The official part of the night was conducted by Bill Sykes MP, member for Benalla and the election results for 2012/13 will see the Group being lead by Merton Olive Grower Rob Mitchell as President, Mitch MacRae as Vice President, Sam Hicks as Secretary, Wendy Oates as Treasurer, Susan Kinloch, Robyn Schrader, Carole Staley and Doug Ridd as committee members.

Prior to the agm executive members from the Upper Goulburn Food Wine and Culture Group, Upper Goulburn Wine Growers and Goulburn Strathbogie Olive Growers participated in a strategic planning workshop lead by Paul Squires, CEO of Lake Mountain Alpine Resort and the outcomes were presented on the night at the AGM. Challenges and opportunities rose from this included joint marketing, increased joint communication, sharing of resources and working together on events. This will be a major member benefit for current members of all groups.

Don McQueen (Hume and Hovell Cricket Ground) and Bryan Horskins (UGWA) spoke about the plans for staging a Vision Australia cricket match to be held in Strath Creek on the 18th November and the opportunities for members to be part of a huge blind cricket event.
